Hurricanes are usually well notified in advance

• Be prepared to evacuate.
Prepare a Family Disaster Plan
• Check to see if you have insurance that covers Hurricanes. If not, find out how to get hurricane insurance.
• Keep insurance policies, documents, and other valuables in a safe-deposit box or a bank.
• Ensure that you have enough fuel to leave if you have to evacuate.
• Select a windowless room in case you have to ride out the storm.
Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit Containing--
• First aid kit and essential medications.
• Canned food and can opener.
• At least three gallons of water per person
• Protective clothing, rainwear, and bedding or sleeping bags.
• Battery-powered radio, torch, and extra batteries.
• Special items for infants, elderly, or disabled family members.
• Written instructions for how to turn off electricity, gas and water if authorities advise you to do so. (Remember, you'll need a professional to turn them back on.)
• Identify where you could go if told to evacuate. Choose several places . . . a friend's home in another town, a hotel, or a shelter.
• Stack furniture high in an attempt to keep it out of water.
|
• Keep a portable radio on and listen to the latest information.
• Stay away from windows and doors
• Keep under shelter inside the house by using tables and mattresses.
• Wait until the hurricane has completely passed.
|
Ensure that the storm has passed.
• Assess immediate damage to property and ensure that there are no immediate risks from debris, fallen trees, power lines etc.
• Air blowers and dehumidifiers will be required to dry out structural damage that may have resulted from flood damage. These will be in short supply following a flood.
• Contact your insurance company and insist that they make a personal visit as soon as possible.
